As well as improving your physical health, losing weight can have a big impact on mental health and wellbeing. This includes improved self-esteem and confidence, feeling happier and more sociable and enjoying a sense of achievement.
If you're overweight, losing weight has many clear physical health benefits and small, simple changes can make a big difference. Gaining weight is often a gradual process. Extra weight causes fat to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer and heart disease. If you’re overweight or living with obesity, lowering your weight can help reduce your risk of developing serious diseases.
Studies have shown that overweight children are much more likely to become obese as adults, and that having a high Body Mass Index (BMI) during pregnancy increases the risk of various complications.
