Active Luton is proudly supporting Drowning Prevention Week in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), helping to raise awareness of water safety and the increasing number of drowning incidents across the country.

The national campaign highlights the importance of understanding how to stay safe around water and what to do in an emergency situation - especially as warmer weather encourages more people to visit swimming pools, lakes, rivers, canals and coastal areas.

According to RLSS UK, more than 200 people accidentally drown in the UK every year, with hundreds more water-related fatalities also recorded annually.

Gary Smith, Swim Teacher at Active Luton, said:

“One of the best things you can do in an emergency is float. Even strong swimmers can drown, which is why learning simple water safety skills can save lives.”

Active Luton is encouraging the community to remember key water safety advice whenever spending time near water.

People are advised to stop and think by assessing their surroundings, looking for dangers and always checking local signs and safety guidance. The RLSS also encourage individuals to stay together by visiting water locations with friends or family whenever possible and choosing lifeguarded venues for swimming.

In an emergency situation, people should call 999 and never enter the water to attempt a rescue. Anyone who falls into the water should float on their back and call for help, while bystanders are encouraged to throw something that floats to assist them.

During Drowning Prevention Week, teams at Lea Manor Recreation Centre and Lewsey Sports Park & Pool have been teaching children about the dangers of cold-water shock.

Cold water shock remains one of the biggest hidden dangers in UK waters and can affect anyone - even strong swimmers. It occurs when somebody suddenly enters cold water, causing the body to react automatically. This can happen in rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs or the sea, even during warm weather, as UK water temperatures often remain below 15°C.

RLSS UK states that more than 60% of drownings involve people who unexpectedly enter the water.

To help children understand these dangers, teams have been using paddling pools set to 15°C as part of practical demonstrations during lessons. The activity helps young people safely experience and understand the effects of cold water in a controlled environment.

Lindsey Bireton, General Manager at Inspire: Luton Sports Village, added:

“Water safety education is vital for all ages. By teaching people how to respond calmly and safely around water, we can help prevent tragedies and build confidence in our communities.”

As a community wellbeing trust, Active Luton offers swimming lessons for people of all ages and abilities, alongside concessionary swim school memberships to support accessible learning opportunities. The organisation also delivers Rookie Lifeguard courses, helping young people build confidence, resilience and essential lifesaving skills.

Swimming lessons and aquatic programmes are available across Active Luton sites, including Inspire: Luton Sports Village, Lea Manor Recreation Centre and Lewsey Sports Park & Pool.
