RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification 8th Edition - Level 2
The NPLQ (National pool Lifeguarding Qualification) course is accredited by the RLSS (Royal Life Saving Society) and takes place at Inspire: Luton Sports Village – a world class aquatics venue. The qualification is recognised nationally and is also a stepping stone towards the International Pool Lifeguard Certificate.
The course is ideal for anyone wishing to train as a Lifeguard either for permanent, part-time or casual employment.
Before starting the course you must be aged 16 or over.
Before stating the training course they must be able to achieve the following minimum swimming standards:
Must be able to swim in minimum of T-Shirt and shorts.
Candidates must have at least a basic level of physical and water fitness.
Jump or Dive into the pool in deep water
Swim 50m in no more than 60 seconds
Swim 100m continuously on front and then on back
Tread water in deep water for 30 secs
Surface dive in the deepest part of the pool - all candidates will be assessed to 2.0m at Inspire: Luton Sports Village or 1.7m at Lewsey Park Pool
Climb out of the pool unaided without using the steps or a ladder
Must be able to undertake practical activity involving lifting, kneeling and lying down

To equip candidates with the skills and knowledge to attain the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification that is widely accepted by swimming pool operators both in the UK and Ireland.
Intensive course delivery over 6 days including assessment. The professional Lifeguard Qualification requires a minimum of 36.5 hours contact time for Sections 1, 2 & 3 (which include AED bolt on module) and then an independent assessment of the core competencies.
The course includes integrated Emergency First Aid At Work Qualification with an option to upgrade to full First Aid At Work Qualification. Candidates will be expected to be in attendance for 100% of the course, in accordance with the timetable specifications.
Where the course trainer feels that the candidate does not meet the assessment criteria standards, they will be referred for further training and a future assessment date will be arranged.
Who should do the course?
Candidates wishing to gain employment opportunities as a lifeguard or to expand on the skills they have already attained through prior courses/training.
Candidates will be taught and required to demonstrate the following skills, during the course and as part of the competency assessment:
Working effectively as a team
Maintaining observation of pool ad users
Water safety and the principles of early intervention and accident prevention
The supervision of pool users
Effective communication with pool users and other team members
The ability to effect a prompt rescue
Using a range of rescue equipment
Entering the water safely, diving to the deepest part of the pool
The ability to recover and land a pool user who is in difficulty
The ability to perform all aspects of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

The management of spinal cord injury
The core competency assessment will consist of a theory and practical assessment (there is no written paper) and this will usually take place on day 6 of the course.
If a candidate is referred on any element of the assessment, they will have a maximum of 28 days to undertake further training and re-assessment in the areas of referral - an additional cost payable by the candidate will be applied for each re-assessment within the 28 day period.

The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NLPQ) is a nationally recognised qualification and following successful completion of this course, candidates will be able to apply for work within the Leisure Industry as a Lifeguard.
