COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Our exercise programme for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other respiratory conditions offers a variety of activities from gym sessions, swimming, circuits, indoor bowls, golf, and more.  Breathing problems can be frightening and there is often a fear of doing too much and not being in control. Our programme is run by qualified pulmonary rehabilitation specialists linked to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and Luton Treatment centre at Vestry Close. They understand the issues and are able to guide you through and ensure that all activities are appropriate, enjoyable and beneficial to everyone taking part.

The groups are very friendly and supportive and social and charity events are also run throughout the year.

Case study

Margaret joined the COPD programme ‘to try and achieve as much movement as possible without getting out of breath and causing pain.’  For Margaret just having someone there to encourage and keep motivated has really helped her:

‘It has helped as I can breathe more easily. I still have the pain and I have a lot more work to do but one of the main things is that it has helped so much with my depression.  It gives me something to look forward to and helps me in lots of ways. I can’t thank everyone enough.’

Case Study

Problems with breathing were a key issue that Linda wanted to address when she joined the COPD programme and she also wanted to try and strengthen her muscles.  For Linda one of the key factors in making progress has been the Active Luton Staff :

‘The people who work at the centre and the people you see every day are such a help in motivating you.  My trainer Tanya is very welcoming and very caring - that’s what makes it worthwhile I’ve met loads of lovely people - Thank you, and to all who work at Lewsey Sports Park.’
