May’s SWIMTAG usage leader, and our IT Infrastructure and Support Analyst, Russell Hillman sat down with us to share more about his regular swimming at Inspire: Luton Sports Village.

 

So, how often do you swim?

Well I try to swim every weekday morning before work at Inspire: Luton Sports Village, between 20 minutes and an hour depending on when I get there. I do front crawl and breast stroke with my head down as I don’t mind getting my hair wet.

What is a lifeguard?
Lifeguards are trained members of staff employed to rescue swimmers who get into difficulty in the pool. You might see them sitting poolside in our yellow shirts with straight faces but rest assured, they’re always ready to act - like when Cade suffered a cardiac arrest during school swimming lessons!

Lifeguarding is a career that works around you - great if you’re still in full-time education or looking for work that fits around your lifestyle.

The answer of course is exercise-related – specifically swimming!  And the great news is that the benefits of swimming are not only enjoyed by the Mark Fosters and Rebecca Adlingtons of the world.  Whatever your level, swimming is hugely beneficial to your health and can also help people with disabilities and long-term health and mobility-limiting conditions. Here are our top tips:

Meet Dave, centre manager at Inspire: Luton Sports Village. It’s the perfect working environment for Dave as he loves to swim most mornings at 6am before work. In today’s blog Dave tells us why he loves using Swim Tag to track his swimming. Swim Tag is now available at all Active Luton’s pools – just ask at reception.

 

How long have you been swimming, Dave?

Since school – and I’m now 56 so that’s quite a while.  But I still like to compete and recently took part in the Masters European Swimming Championships.  ‘Masters’ means over 25 – so I easily qualify!

Age Seven Can Mark ‘Tragic Decline’ in Fitness Levels

A recent study has concluded that our children are entering a “tragic decline” from the age of just seven, with activity levels dropping long before they leave primary school.

The study tracking 500 children over eight years showed a sharp drop in activity levels between the ages of seven and nine with a decline continuing into adolescence.

Previous research indicated that the fall in activity levels among children happens in adolescence but this new study has called this into questions and put a greater importance on teaching our children to be active right from the moment they can walk and encouraging continued activity throughout school years.
